Buttery Flaky Apple Pie Bars Recipe

These Buttery Flaky Apple Pie Bars are packed with tender spiced apples and layered between golden, flaky crust. They taste like classic apple pie but come in easy-to-slice bar form. Perfect for holidays, bake sales, or cozy weekends. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra comfort.

Ingredients
  

  • For the crust and topping:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • For the apple filling:
  • 4 cups apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt, then cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  3. Add egg and mix until dough forms.
  4. Press two-thirds of dough into bottom of prepared pan.
  5. In another bowl, toss apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch.
  6. Spread apple mixture evenly over crust.
  7. Crumble remaining dough over apple layer.
  8. Bake 40–45 minutes until golden brown and filling bubbles.
  9. Cool completely before slicing into bars.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture.
  • Chill the dough briefly if it becomes too soft to handle.
  • Let bars cool fully for clean slices.
  • Store covered at room temperature up to 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
