Japanese Katsu Bowls with Tonkatsu Sauce

These Japanese katsu bowls are crispy, juicy, and loaded with bold umami flavor. Golden breaded chicken served over fluffy rice and drizzled with sweet-savory tonkatsu sauce—simple, satisfying, and better than takeout. It’s comfort food with a crunchy twist.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 chicken breasts flattened
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs panko preferred
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • Oil for frying
  • 3 cups cooked white rice
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • For Tonkatsu Sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Method
 

  1. Season chicken with salt and pepper.
  2. Coat chicken in flour, dip in eggs, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  3. Heat oil and fry chicken until golden and fully cooked.
  4. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  5. Mix all tonkatsu sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  6. Slice chicken into strips.
  7. Divide rice into bowls and top with shredded cabbage.
  8. Place sliced chicken on top and drizzle with sauce.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying.
  • Add a soft-boiled egg for extra richness.
