- In a saucepan whisk together sugar flour and salt
- Gradually add milk and cook over medium heat stirring constantly until thick
- In a bowl whisk egg yolks then slowly add some hot mixture to temper them
- Pour egg mixture back into saucepan and cook until smooth and creamy
- Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract
- In a dish layer vanilla wafers banana slices and custard
- Repeat layers ending with custard on top
- Add whipped cream or meringue as topping
- Chill in refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving
