Shepherd's Pie RECIPE

This Shepherd’s Pie is hearty, comforting, and packed with rich savory flavor. Seasoned ground lamb or beef simmers with vegetables in a flavorful gravy, then gets topped with creamy mashed potatoes. It bakes until golden and bubbly on top. Perfect for cozy dinners or meal prep.

Ingredients
  

  • For the meat filling:
  • 1 lb ground lamb or ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • For the mashed potato topping:
  • 3 cups prepared mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brown ground lamb or beef in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and garlic and cook until softened.
  4. Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
  5. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  7. Stir in peas and carrots and cook 2 minutes.
  8. Spread meat mixture evenly in baking dish.
  9. Mix mashed potatoes with butter and milk until smooth.
  10. Spread mashed potatoes over meat layer and sprinkle cheese on top if using.
  11. Bake 20–25 minutes until top turns golden.
  12. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use lamb for traditional flavor and beef for a budget-friendly option.
  • Rough up mashed potatoes with a fork for crispier peaks.
  • Broil 2–3 minutes for extra golden topping.
  • Store refrigerated up to 3 days and reheat covered.
